Small stones (less than 4–5mm) can sometimes pass on their own with adequate hydration and pain management. However, larger stones, stones causing obstruction, or stones associated with infection almost always require medical intervention.
Laser stone treatment is performed under anaesthesia, so you feel no pain during the procedure. Post-procedure discomfort is typically minimal — most patients manage with simple oral pain medication and return to normal activity within a few days.
Most patients are discharged within 24–48 hours. Light activities can be resumed within 2–3 days. A follow-up ultrasound is typically done at 2–4 weeks to confirm complete stone clearance.
Kidney stones can recur, especially if the underlying metabolic cause is not addressed. Dr. Amit advises on dietary modifications, hydration, and — where appropriate — medical therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence.
Surgery (PCNL or open) is required for very large stones (typically >2cm), stones that cannot be reached through the natural urinary passage, or complex staghorn stones.
RIRS and URSL have stone-clearance rates of 85–95% for appropriately selected stones. PCNL achieves clearance rates above 95% for large or complex stones.
